[Powerpoint Presentation by Paul Walker]

[Program for Download]

Opening and Welcome: Ulrike Wunderle, Executive Director FGS

Moderation: Reiner Braun, Co-President IPB / Executive Director IALANA

Since the first use of poison gas in World War I almost exactly 100 years ago, the world was anxious to ban these inhumane and indiscriminately killing weapons of mass destruction. With the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) signed in 1997, 8 countries declared their stockpiles of chemical weapons - a total of over 72.000 tons. With Syria, the most recent ratifying country and a CWC- member since 2003, a total of 190 states have given their consent to be bound by the Convention and only 6 of the United Nations member states still have not joined it.

In his presentation, Paul Walker is going to outline the manifold challenges in the safe elimination of chemical weapons stockpiles, as well as to expand on the progress achieved up to date in the destruction of more than 58,000 tons of chemical warfare agents, i.a. in the U.S. and Russia. Further topics will be the ongoing elimination of declared chemical weapons in Syria and the international arms control regimes.

Paul Walker, director of the organization Environmental Security and Sustainability Green Cross International, has been committed for decades to the elimination of chemical weapons. In 2013 he was awarded the Alternative Nobel Prize "Right Livelihood Award". In addition, Paul Walker is a member of the INES Council and was a National Coordinator of the Nuclear Freeze Movement in the 80th. Furthermore he is engaged in the US peace and disarmament movement.
